“Priscilla” Strengthens to Category 2 Hurricane

The cyclone has triggered torrential downpours in Los Cabos and moderate to heavy rainfall in La Paz, leading to the rapid swelling of streams and the sweeping away of vehicles in affected areas.

La Paz, Baja California Sur — Hurricane Priscilla gained strength Tuesday afternoon, officially escalating to a Category 2 storm, with sustained winds reaching 175 km/h and gusts up to 250 km/h, moving west-northwest at 17 km/h, according to the National Water Commission (CONAGUA).

The cyclone began unleashing torrential rains in Los Cabos late Monday night and into Tuesday morning, while La Paz experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, varying by neighborhood.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the eye of the hurricane was located 340 km south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas and 515 km west of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco.

In response to the worsening conditions, the State Civil Protection Council announced that classes at all levels will remain suspended on Wednesday.

Flooding has already impacted low-lying areas in both Los Cabos and La Paz, with streams overflowing and parked vehicles swept away in several densely populated neighborhoods.

 

CONAGUA forecasts rainfall between 75 and 150 millimeters overnight Tuesday and into early Wednesday across Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, and Nayarit.
